Art and Ann were obviously separated at this point, but where is their son, Bobbie? Bobbie was born in 1918, and on January 10th, Ann would have been almost eight months pregnant with her second (and final) child with Art. Note that Y-DNA testing has proven Ann's son to be a full 67/67 match with his younger half-brother (i.e., Art's son with his second wife, Ida), so there is no question with regard to Bobbie being Art's son. So, is Bobbie's absence here simply enumerator error?

4b. 1930 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com): can't find Ann (or her mother or her children), at least. My Dad tells me they moved from San Francisco to Alameda when he was in the Seventh Grade (age 11), so it's conceivable they missed the census during the move.

Ann's middle name was California; ROSE was her maiden name. MARTILLA was Ida's maiden name, not her mother's maiden name; that is, MARTILLA was her father's surname, not her mother's.

Anna C. Rose Matthiesen
Born in Sutter Creek in 1899
Anna California Rose Matthiesen, who was born in Sutter Creek, died Feb. 11 in a San Francisco convalescent hospital at the age of 94.
Her daughter, Betty Cogliati of San Francisco, said Mrs. Matthiesen was born on Sept. 9, 1899, which also was Admission Day, and that led to her middle name of California. When she was young she participated in many Sept. 9 parades in Sutter Creek, her daughter said.
Mrs. Matthiesen was the daughter of Judge William Lee Rose and Maude Irene Thompson Rose and was descended from the pioneer families of McCray, Thompson and Rose, her daughter said.
In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a son, Robert 'Bob' Matthiesen; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Private memorial services will be held in Palo Alto.
