Y-DNA Haplogroup I Modal Haplotypes — with Markers in FTDNA Order
Extracted from an Excel spreadsheet created by Ken Nordtvedt and online at his web site (as of 30 Oct 2007).  The research is entirely his; any errors of extraction, interpretation, or conversion are mine.

Nordtvedt's data are reformatted here as an HTML table with markers in FTDNA order for ease of use by FTNDA project admins and members.  If you are not comparing test results from FTDNA, you will likely find it easier to use Nordtvedt's original Excel spreadsheet, rather than this page.

Because Nordtvedt's modal values are based on data from the SMGF (Sorensen Molecular Genealogy Foundation) database, which he extracts from the database using DNA Heritage lab standards, some markers need to be changed to conform to FTDNA standards.  SMGF supplies a chart (see SMGF Marker Standards) to be used in making these conversions, the relevant portion of which is extracted here.  Note that the conversion factors at SMGF are those needed to convert values from other labs to SMGF values.  The conversion from Ken's table to mine is in the opposite direction, from SMGF to FTDNA, so the sign of the operation is reversed.

Wherever the conversion factors for DNA Heritage and FTDNA are the same, there should be no need to convert the values from Nordtvedt's Excel spreadsheet to this HTML table.  Thus it would appear that YGATA-H4 would be the only value in need of conversion (by subtracting 1), and I have made the conversion in the table below.  (To remind myself to do the change when updating the table, I've distinguished the Excel column label in boldface and color:  AO.)  There are two additional conversions needed, however…

Although Nordtvedt used the DNA Heritage standard to extract his data, he tells me he used the "low convention" for DYS452 by subtracting 19.  Therefore, to bring the values from his spreadsheet back into synch with values reported by FTDNA, I have added 19 back in again (Excel column label in blue: X).  Likewise, Nordtvedt subtracts two from the DNA Heritage standard for DYS463, so to bring it into compliance with FTDNA values, I've added 2 back in again (Excel column label in purple: AH).

The nine markers routinely tested by SMGF that are not part of the standard 67 markers at FTNDA (far right in the tables) are now available "a la carte" at FTDNA as part of their Advanced tests.

Two rather strong bifurcations occur in Hg I.  One is DYS455=8 (red table cells), which is not just characteristic of I1a, but is virtually unique to it among European haplotypes.  Its value in I1b is usually 11 (less commonly 10 or, rarely, 9).  There is also a pair of markers, namely YCA-IIab (table cells also in red), whose values in I1a are universally, though not exclusively, 19,21.

Another strong bifurcation is within I1a, between the more southerly AngloSaxon forms and the more northerly Norse and ultraNorse forms.  This bifurcation is exemplified by values for DYS511 and DYS462, which are 9,12 for the AngloSaxon varieties (bright green table cells) and 10,13 for the Norse/ultraNorse varieties (bright blue table cells).  [Colors of these cells added by DGM (not in Nordtvedt's spreadsheet).]

Because HTML cannot duplicate the heavy cell border used for emphasis in Nordtvedt's spreadsheet, I have substituted boldface text for such cells.  Viewing hint:  to have more of the table visible without scrolling, set the text size in your browser to "smallest."
