R1b is the most common haplogroup in western Europe (see frequency distribution maps), so it is not surprising that it is a common haplogroup in the project.
Western Atlantic Modal Haplotype — WAMH

Of the many haplotypes represented within R1b, the most common 12-marker haplotype is called the "Western Atlantic Modal Haplotype."  In the results tables below, the R1b modal haplotypes are highlighted in cyan and are used as standards against which to compare our R1b members.  The modal value for each marker is taken independently; no one individual is modal for all values, so no one actually has this entire haplotype.  FTDNA members whose 12-marker haplotype matches one of the four most common 12-marker R1b haplotypes will find they have a WAMH logo on their member page.

Thirty project members are Haplogroup R1b; they fall into 11 subclades and 26 families.

Red labels indicate markers that typically mutate more frequently than those labeled in black. Marker 464 mutates most rapidly of all and sometimes has five to seven counts (a-g), not just four (a-d).
(Empty cells that are darkened indicate tests not ordered.)

This individual was tested at Ancestry-DNA.  Data were adjusted using these conversion factors, adapted from the Ysearch Conversion Page:  DYS441, subtract 1; DYS442, subtract 5; GATA-H4, subtract 11; Y-GATA-A10, subtract 2.
He bears the Western Atlantic Modal Haplotype, so he would be designated WAMH by FTDNA.  At Ysearch, he has hundreds of 12/12 matches, but no match above 16/16.

#N37888 is a transfer from the National Geographic Society's Genographic Project.  At 12 markers, he has one of the four most common R1b haplotypes, so he is designated WAMN by FTDNA and has hundreds of full matches in the FTDNA database.  He has, in fact, the most common 9-marker R1b haplotype in Denmark.  Still, he has no full or even near matches in the FTDNA database at 25 (or 37) markers and no match in the project.

#72898 has an 11/12 match with the R1b modal haplotype; so, not surprisingly, he has over a thousand 12/12 matches in the FTDNA database, alone.  At 25 markers, however, his match with the modal haplotype falls away; and he has no full matches and only a dozen or so near match at this level.  He has no full or even near matches at 37 markers.

Because this individual has one of the WAMH haplotypes, he has hundreds of matches at 12 markers (all in other surnames), though nothing higher than 11/12 in the project.  Your project admin recommends this member upgrade to at least 37 markers, to distance himself from the coincidental matches.

#N44908 has a perfect 12/12 match with the WAMH, so it is not surprising that he has over a thousand matches in the FTDNA database (and over 1200 in the Ysearch database).  In fact, he possesses the 7th most common 9-marker haplotype in Denmark.  At 12 markers, he also matches other members of this project.  Your project admin recommends that #N44908 upgrade to at least 37 markers to get a better assessment of his relationship to them.

This individual has a 12/12 match with the WAMH and possesses the 7th most common 9-marker haplotype in Denmark, so it is not surprising that he has over a thousand 12/12 matches in the FTDNA database (and over 1200 in the Ysearch database), including two in this project (see previous two tables above).  However, while he has a few near matches at 25 markers, he has no full matches at 25 or more markers and is not related to the above JAKOBSEN.  This member's father was adopted, and while the identity of his paternal grandfather is uncertain, he is suspected to have also been a JENSEN.

#N44326 is a transfer from the National Geographic Society's Genographic Project.  Based on 12 markers, he is deduced to be R1b1b2.  This individual has an uncommon haplotype (for an R1b1b2) with just sixteen 12/12 matches in the FTDNA database, all in other surnames.  He does have one 11/12 match in the project (see the HANSEN in the next table).  I recommend upgrading to 37 markers to see if this match holds up or falls away.

This ALLEN was originally HANSEN.  This individual has a rare haplotype.  He has only a handfull of matches at 12 markers, and no full or even near matches at 25 or more markers in the FTDNA database; likewise, at Ysearch, he has only two 12/12 matches and no full matches above 12/12.
#110236 has undergone deep SNP testing at FTDNA, with these results:
M207+ M173+ M343+ P25+ M18- M73-  M269+ M65- M153- SRY2627- M126- M160-  M37- M222- P66-
The first set of positive results prove he is R-1b1; the negative results for M18 and M73 rule out R-1b1a and R-1b1b-1; the positive result for M269 proves he is R-1b1b-2; the remaining negative results rule out subclades of R-1b1b-2a1b.  Numerous R1b SNPs downstream of M269 have been discovered since our subject was tested.  Your project admin recommends another round of SNP testing to determine his subclade of R-1b1b-2.

This THORN was originaly CHRISTENSEN.  He has hundreds of matches at 12 markers, but none in the project and none in either THORN or CHRISTENSEN.  Your project admin recommends upgrading to more markers to gain separation from these distant matches.

Not surprisingly, these first cousins (once removed) are a 37/37 match.  Their haplotype is uncommon, with only a handful of matches at 12 or 25 markers and no matches at 37 markers, except with each other.

#N75112 is a 12/12 match with the R1b modal haplotype.  Not surprisingly, he has over 1700 exact matches in the FTDNA database.  Your project admin recommends upgrading to at least 37 markers.

#157348 is an 11/12 match with the modal haplotype for R1b, so he has over 100 exact matches at 12 markers in the FTDNA database.  He has a dozen or so near matches, but no full matches, at 25 markers.  At 37 markers, he pulls well away from the modal haplotype and has no full or even near matches at 25 markers.  I recommend uploading to Ysearch to see if there may be a match there.  Until he gets a near match at 37 markers, there's no need to upgrade to 67 markers.
